Magnificent Maurice, or the Flowers of Immortality

It is a cold, dark November day, but I have a bright, warm story to share. Very pleased to report that my story about a universe-protecting cat Magnificent Maurice, or the Flowers of Immortality is now live at Lightspeed Magazine. I answered some interesting questions about the story posed by Alex Puncekar (Thanks Alex!) and you can look those up here. This is my third appearance at Lightspeed. Very pleased that the first time wasn’t a fluke, heh.

This story was very fun to write, and I hope you find it fun to read. It’s about Maurice, a cat who is responsible for keeping the World Tree safe from predators and pests. But Maurice is getting on in age; he won’t be around forever, and it’s time to pass the baton to younger cats. But tell that to Maurice!

Terry Pratchett fans will recognize the reference to the canny cat from The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. There is also a reference to my favorite Star Trek character, Lieutenant Uhura.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends! Stay safe and warm and eat good food.

    Hi Rati!

I just read “Magnificent Maurice” and your interview on Lightspeed and had to come over here to say just how much I enjoyed both of them. Btw, while I haven’t yet read that particularly Pratchett book (I’ve only read a couple; hoping to change that!) I definitely could feel Pratchett-y vibes. Additionally, I really loved the vibe as a whole – the mythology of the World Tree, the theme of aging and mortality, the glimpses at life and death beyond Maurice – such a wonderful way to spend a Christmas morning.

Thank you for sharing your gift,
    JYB
