December, and I have managed to sneak in a third publication before the end of the year, yay! Yes, it is story day, my favorite. The Teleporting Disaster Fairy was published in the Nov/Dec issue of Uncanny Magazine and is now free to read online. Or you can listen to the podcast if you prefer audio. This is one of my more absurd stories. The character has very little agency but tries, despite the universe, to do her best. Which I guess sums me up as well, hah.
As I mention in my interview with Editor-in-Chief Michael Damian Thomas, my starting point for the story was the question posed by the narrator: why is existence within the framework for the inexplicable things happening to her. As the narrator says, that is the biggest and most unanswerable question of all. Hence she is able to take the strangeness of her life in stride. (I would that I could do the same. Honestly, though, if I were to go through something like that, I would faint from terror, wake up, and then promptly faint again.)
This story was a lot of fun for me to write. The various disasters pretty much wrote themselves. I crave a disaster-free vacation as much as Kittu does and – for different reasons – don’t see a vacation happening any time soon. As for the ending, I hope you like it as much as I do.
A big Thank You to Uncanny Magazine for giving a home to my stories. These are very tough times for the short fiction market, and magazines depend on their supporters for funding. Check out their Patreon here.
